Today I’m sharing my inspiration board for a modern farmhouse family room in our new house!
So here we are! At the beginning of a new chapter in a new home! We have so many ideas for our new abode, and have already started work on a number of projects, but we also recognize and appreciate that it will take a good many years to complete all of the ideas we have planned. Needless to say, vision is the key component of any major renovation project, and we’ve got lots of it! So before we share any of our projects, I thought it would be fun to start by sharing some my inspiration boards for the various rooms. First up: the heart of the home, the family room!

Let’s start with a quick recap of the current family room from my recent Our New Home post:
In terms of layout and the flow of the house, the family room will be the main space for family hang out time and also guest entertaining. We also made the decision to turn the original living room into the new dining room (above), and turn the original dining room into an office as we needed that space, and we felt that a formal living room would not be used as much. While I originally had concerns that the dining room would now be located on the far side of the house away from the kitchen, I actually really love this idea because it will create a natural flow for dinner parties and more formal family get-togethers. Plus that tall ceiling needed a chandelier, am I right?
The current stone fireplace is nothing short of overwhelming. It brings the room down and makes it feel very small towards that end of the space. We have plans to turn this back into a wood-burning fireplace, to reface the stone around the center of the fireplace, and to add in built in bookshelves for storage on either side.
In between the family room and the kitchen there is a half-wall that currently serves as a wet bar, with built-in cabinets, bar sink, and lots of mirror. The long-term plan is to eventually tear this wall down to create a more open space.
The photos above and below are some of my key inspiration photos for this space. We are going for an overall modern farmhouse vibe, as the home itself is fairly contemporary but we like touches of a farmhouse style. We hope to put a beam (similar to the ones in these photos) across the space separating the kitchen and eat-in dining area from the family room once the half-wall comes down.
And keeping with our modern farmhouse vibe, we are looking at an eclectic mix of more modern base furniture with lots of rustic farmhouse accent pieces. The Crate & Barrel Lounge II sofa is the anchor piece for our new family room design, since after we tested it out at their local store we were convinced that there is no comfier sofa out there! Check out my inspiration board below to see some of the other pieces we are looking at to complement it!
Chair | Sofa | Ottoman | Poof | Coffee Table | Sideboard
Now it’s your turn: share with me below what your favorite piece is in your family room and why? Thanks for reading, and I can’t wait to share our next inspiration board with all of you soon!

One of my friends got photo tiles as one of theircustom housewarming gifts, and it looked really wonderful hanging in their living room. I guess we can also consider bringing some personalization into our decor.
