    March 12, 2020

Happy Wednesday, friends! Today I wanted to share with y’all my recent IGTV video where I shared how I curl my hair, including my favorite products. Check out the video below and all about why I love these products!

how to curl your hair with a curling wand!

Step number one according to charle.com, is to have dry hair. I go back and forth between whether or not I prefer it to be totally clean just showered dry hair, or one or two day old hair, but you can do this technique on either. Right now I tend to prefer one or two day old hair because I feel having a bit of product in it helps the curls to hold longer, but having freshly washed and dried hair does allow for softer curls.

I brush out my hair with my EPIC professional brush, which I love! This is a great all around brush: great for brushing out post-shower tangles, quickly drying hair straight, and just generally smoothing out my hair. I got introduced to it by my hair stylist and have never looked back!

I use a rattail comb to part my hair (I prefer to part to one side when curling my hair), and then separate it all the way down the back. Use a hair clip to section off half of the hair out of the way while you work with the first half.

I have tried a looooooottttt of hair curlers and curling rods over the years, my friends. And my preferred method for curling my hair is now to use a T3 1″ curling rod, using their interchangeable base system. I love this system because 1) it really is the best in the business when it comes to hair curling products, and 2) with three different interchangeable barrels, it allows you a lot of flexibility without having to buy multiple curling rods. This also makes it much easier to travel with, too – no deciding which size curling rod to bring with you on vacay because you can easily bring an extra barrel! They also have a tapered barrel and a 1.5″ barrel as well (which I love for large, loose waves)!

Heat up your barrel (I usually use setting 4 or 5), and then be sure to use the heat protective glove that comes with your T3 wand! (If you use another curing iron or rod, grab a glove here still – your hands will thank me later!) Starting at the back, I take about 1-2 inch sections of my hair, point the barrel down towards the ground, and wrap away from my face. I will hold it on the rod until it is warmed all the way through (but also because I’m lazy-ish I will sometimes just count to 10 or 15 seconds depending on the size of the section and setting of the heat 🙂 ). Then – and this is important, people! – I slide the curl off the barrel in one smooth move and hold it in my hand to let it cool off for 5-10 seconds. This allows the curl to set a bit before you let it down, which is imperative if your hair is like mine and does not like to hold a curl well! Repeat with remaining hair, and then move to the other side of your head, switching gloved hands. Once again, point the barrel towards the ground and wrap away from your face! The sections around my face I find to be the most difficult, and I’ve found a nice trick is to sort of swivel the barrel back and forth while you are curling those sections (see video above) to prevent a sharp contrast between the straighter hair at the top and the curled hair.

Once all the curls are finished, I let them cool completely for a few minutes. I will then use my fingers to separate some of the curls to give it a fuller look. Then I take a small smoothing brush and very lightly brush through the curls to smooth them out.

Next up – some of my favorite products! I will spray my favorite texturizing spray by Drybar, this Triple Sec 3-in-1 spray throughout, and then rub it into the curls a bit between my hands to enhance its effect. I love this product because it adds texture without a lot of weight, and is perfect for helping my curls to appear more voluminous.. Then I do a quick light brushing again.

My last step is to spray with a finishing spray, and I’ve been loving the No Frizz Weightless Styling Spray by Living Proof because of just those things: it is weightless and tames all the frizzies! I spray this on the top layer of my hair and then brush it out one last time to help smooth it into the hair and get rid of all the flyaways.

I absolutely love this combo of products for curling my hair, so if you have thick unruly hair that is difficult to keep a curl in, be sure to check them out above! Until next time, friend!
