Before and After: A DIY Powder Room Remodel

Today I am so excited to share with you guys our powder room remodel! This was a super fun project, and pretty easy to pull together, so read on for all the details!

Before

I love our house, don’t get me wrong, but let’s face it: new build houses often feature all those “lovely” builder grade finishes. Like standard inexpensive tiles, and super basic hardware. That just is not my jam, and so I really wanted to spruce up our powder room and make it much more elegant, without breaking the bank and without making too many major changes.

That being said, I wanted to change it enough so that people will notice that the room was different from what it was before. Not too much, but just enough, if that makes sense. Even if you are happy with your home, I always think it is a good idea to freshen it up every now and then, especially if you have so many ideas that you want to put to the test.

The powder room is something that I have wanted to change for a while, but it is something that we have only just got around to doing. Though sad, it has given me plenty of time to think about how I want to design it. The first thing I wanted to change was the lighting fixtures, which I knew I would need to hire somewhere like this electrical installation in Derry, NH company to do the electrical work for me because when it comes to this part of the renovation, I am a bit clueless. I’m not ashamed to say it either. Once this part has been done, I can’t wait to shop around for new lighting fixtures and other pieces that I want for my powder room.

In addition, I’m considering installing a smoke detector inside the room to serve as an alarm in the event of a fire. I’ve seen many houses burn down because of a single act of negligence. That is a risk I am unwilling to take. I am aware that I am somewhat careless, so it is even more important for me to take such precautions. Though I may have to do some additional work to contact a professional from a company similar to Allied Electric, it will be worth it in the end. I’m fairly certain of it!

If you ask me, a powder room is a great place to start if you are looking to redesign any rooms in your home. It is a small enough space so that, if you experiment with colors or other potentially “risky” design elements, it’s small enough to not be too expensive to quickly change it 🙂 That’s why I decided to go bold with the paint color here: basically as bold as you can go! I chose a super dark charcoal “almost black” color for the walls. I was a little concerned it might make the space seem smaller than it is, but the end result was just what I had envisioned: dark and elegant. I think it’s important to keep in mind when using dark colors, don’t paint the ceiling! Leave it white so that your space doesn’t feel closed off.

I love the combination of black with metallics, so I went with a lot of golds and bronzes in the details. Like my gold foil Hustle sign which I absolutely L-O-V-E, and our gorgeous antique style light fixture. I also replaced all the hardware with some beautiful brass pieces I found on Amazon.com. I absolutely love brass!

Now that I’m happy with the end result, I feel more confident to be able to redecorate some of the rooms upstairs. We had a leak in the ceiling in our bedroom recently that turned out to be the result of a missing roof tile, so once we’ve used a roofing firm similar to these roof restoration Canberra experts to have the roof fixed, I’ll get onto giving the stained ceiling a new lick of paint – potentially with a more exciting colour than white!!
