3 Reasons Why a Gray Sofa is Essential + Sofa Inspiration – The Charming Detroiter
Today I’m sharing the top three reasons why you need a gray sofa in your house!
When we moved into our new house, I knew we would need a new sofa that was comfy and stylish. Firstly, because our old sofa was just too small for the new space, but mostly because one of our precious angels (read: anxiety-ridden dogs) had artfully chewed the piping on one of the armrests, in just such a way where I couldn’t just hide it with a pillow when company came 😀 And so our old sofa (also gray!) was sold, and I went on the hunt for a new gray sofa. Our old sofa wasn’t too bad so we could sell it on, however, some are certainly not fit for re-sale so it is best to contact a couch and furniture removal service to get rid of it if that’s you. With our old one finally gone, a new gray sofa was on the horizon. Why gray? Let me tell you!
Not too light like an ivory or white sofa, and not too dark like a black or navy sofa, it is the perfect neutral color to mix and match your style around it over the years. Gray sofas can fit in with every style from contemporary to traditional to. . . modern farmhouse! Gray is the color that symbolizes intellect. Since gray appears to be less pronounced than other colors, it has a soothing effect. Additionally, gray can act as the perfect neutral color as it can diminish brighter hues.
We ultimately chose the Lounge II sectional from Crate & Barrel because of the versatility of pieces you can choose from to make your perfect sectional. We knew we wanted a lounge-y chaise section and we knew we wanted a deep couch, and this one did not disappoint! Sometime, being pregnant these days, I joke with the hubs that he will come home from work and find me laying back on the sofa, just waiting for him to come home and help me out of it 😀 It also comes in a plethora of color and fabric choices to pick from, so be sure to grab a few samples from in their store to match it in your own home before purchasing!
Keeping in line with gray being the perfect transitional piece between different styles is that it allows for super easy switching out of other decor should your style change. Because we knew this time the sofa would be a more expensive investment piece that we would have for a long time to come, I wanted something that would easily fit with different decor over the seasons and years as my style adapts. I can more easily and affordably change out pillows, blankets, lamps, and even a coffee table without spending an arm and a leg to replace a larger piece of furniture.

And lastly (and perhaps most importantly?): it hides pet hair and dirt so well! These two puppies of ours are hairy, let me tell you, and it’s all I can do to keep up with it. This allows them to come up on the sofa with us when they want, and it keeps my OCD tendencies at bay! (Gray was also the perfect color choice for that one time I spilled half a glass of wine on the sofa and had to clean it up 😀 Whoops!).
Now tell me below: what do you think of gray sofas? Yay or nay – which color would you choose?

I agree with you completely that gray is the perfect neutral. There’s just something about gray that goes with everything, thus it fits in with the neutral title. Getting the right tones is the critical step in making a good match. Warm gray colors are suitable for warmer-toned colors, such as taupe. Contrasting the cold gray is cooler colors such as sage green, navy blue, and light whites. Thanks for this article.
