Happy Monday, friends! I’m so excited to announce today that the plan for our major 2022 renovation is our family room! With our basement (ie. a second living space) almost finished, the next space to get upgraded will be the family room, as we are in desperate need of some major stone removal and increased storage space in this area (as you can see from the myriad of toddler toys strewn about 😀 ). The plan will be to gut this California river rock wall and put in new fireplace stone with builtin cabinets and shelving on either side, and then mount the TV over the mantle. We’ll round out the space with some new furniture and decor accessories for what will hopefully be a sophisticated yet comfy, lived-in feel in this space! Check out our current family room and all my inspo below!

our inspiration

I’ve found a number of lovely inspiration photos for this space! This first one is a lot of what I had envisioned, although our fireplace will workout differently as it is elevated over a step and not at ground level. I love the stacked stone with the gray undertones of this fireplace, and it looks dreamy when paired with these chunky built in bookcases!

You might be here looking for some similar ideas to implement at your fireplace. But before that, do you think your fireplace needs an upgrade, having exhausted itself from warming up your home for years? Even if it hasn’t given up, you can still think of an upgrade as modern fireplaces tend to improve the overall aesthetics of a house with their modern design. Moreover, you can get the desired look only by getting a new one installed. If you choose to do so and want to explore a few options in that regard, you might want to visit this website.

Another big inspo photo for us for the fireplace style is this large stacked stone style. I love the sizes of the stones here and the pairing with this rustic wood beam mantle. Perfection!

I also kind of love the idea of the shiplap behind these bookshelves, but might consider horizontal shiplap instead for a more traditional look.

The other option I’m considering is more open shelving, although this might lead to some logistical issues with how the fireplace will be built. But I’m loving these option shelf options below!
